A crimefighter will be welcomed at Westminster after battling street drunks and hooligans.

Community activist Derek Peacock, from Kemp Town, Brighton, will receive a £1,000 cheque from ministers at the Houses of Parliament on Thursday.

He has been chosen as one of 30 winners in a contest to find campaigners who had done the most to tackle anti-social behaviour in the neighbourhoods.

Mr Peacock, of White Street, helped draw up Brighton and Hove's first street drinking ban, introduced in Kemp Town in November 2001.

He has also campaigned for better police protection for victims of homophobic attacks and organised a safe shops scheme in St James's Street in Kemp Town.

The competition was launched to coincide with Home Secretary David Blunkett's Anti-Social Behaviour Bill.
