The biggest hospital trust in Sussex is offering a "substantial" pay deal to attract a new boss.

A position for a chief executive of Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust is being advertised today.

The new chief will replace long-serving Stuart Welling, who leaves his post after 13 years in June.

He plans to set up an independent management consultancy.

The advertisement says: "We need an individual with the vision and ability to successfully balance our pursuit of clinical excellence, achieving value for money and performance targets, leading and developing our staff, promoting a new teaching hospital and forging productive relationships with local stakeholders.

"A substantial pay package is being offered."

A hospital spokesman said: "It is a high-profile and demanding job and the salary needs to reflect the huge demands placed on the post holder."

The chief executive's salary is less than that of Brighton and Hove City Council chief executive David Panter, who is on £145,000.

The trust is responsible for the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Sussex Eye Hospital and the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Sick Children in Brighton.

It also runs the Princess Royal Hospital and Hurstwood Park Neurosciences Centre in Haywards Heath.

Interviews for the post are likely to be held in January.
