Worthing are aiming for two more wins before Christmas to keep them on the edge of the promotion picture.

Ian Davies' men turned in a steely defensive display to win 17-7 at Staines in London One.

The result takes them to five wins from nine games and they will look to add further success against London Nigerian and Old Albanians.

Coach Davies said: "That was probably our best defensive showing for the last few weeks.

"The scoreline didn't flatter us at all. We controlled the ball for long periods."

Terry Butler scored the opening try on four minutes after great work by flanker Russell Carr.

Stuart McLaughlin converted and added a penalty before half time.

Andy Phillips settled matters with a bizarre second half try.

He broke away from a ruck and ran to the line at half pace, seemingly expecting the whistle to blow.

McLaughlin goaled before Staines pulled back a converted try.
