Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Michel Kuipers has left hospital after a car crash.

The former Dutch Marine was airlifted to the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath after being cut free from the wreckage.

He had been on his way to a club training session at the University of Sussex's Falmer campus yesterday when his yellow Mazda was in a collision with a silver Vauxhall Astra driven by a police officer.

Kuipers, who lives in Haywards Heath, was carried from the accident spot on Ditchling Beacon Road, Brighton.

He had suffered a minor head injury.

Albion Chairman Dick Knight, said: "I have visited Michel and spoken to him. Thankfully it appears he only received lacerations and minor injuries. All Albion fans will join me in wishing Michel a speedy recovery."

The police officer from West Downs Police Division, who was driving an unmarked hire car and was on duty but not in uniform, was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital suffering a minor injury to her wrist.

The driver's side of the yellow sports car was severely damaged and firefighters had to cut off the roof.

Inspector Mark Armstrong, of Sussex Police, said: "Officers are investigating and we would appeal for any witnesses."

The Argus reported on Wednesday how Albion manager Mark McGhee cannot afford to keep Kuipers and his rival for the keeper's shirt, Ben Roberts, at the club.

There has been speculation the Dutchman could be sold to Hull.

The team has been training in preparation for Saturday's away game at Notts County.

Mr McGhee got the players together after the training session to break the news.
