A somewhat confused Nigel Page (Letters, November 13): says: "Direct action is, in the majority of cases, violent and in no way peaceful."

May I suggest that the moral intelligence of Mr Page would be better appreciated if he was less ignorant of major developments in 20th Century civilisation.

The work (and violent deaths) of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr come to mind, as does Gandhi's answer to the question: "What do you think of western civilisation?" His response: "I think it would be a good idea."
