I wish Norman Baker MP every success with his plan to prevent shops selling Christmas goods or playing carols before December 1.

I used to love Christmas but I have come to dread the whole business, despite having young children of my own.

It has become nothing but a vast commercial frenzy, with businesses ramming it down our throats in shops, the media doing the same from August and gullible people feeling they "must have" this, that or the other.

They compete with one another to see how much they can spend/drink/eat and children pester like mad to get the latest hyped-up toy which will be broken or forgotten by January.
