A confused rail passenger survived after stepping off a train travelling at 50mph.
The man, in his early 30s, had fallen asleep on the South Central train between Worthing central and Goring on Friday night.
He woke up and inexplicably decided to step off the train while it was still moving.
Lying beside the railway line with a head injury, he called an ambulance by dialling 999 on his mobile phone but didn't know where he was.
The man could only tell the operator he was near a railway line.
The man was was found 250 yards east of Goring station, near a level crossing.
He was taken to Worthing Hospital with minor injuries.
A police spokesman said: "Whether he woke up startled or alcohol played a part we don't know. There is a possibility he may have been sleepwalking."
