Two tries in a minute were not enough to save Haywards Heath from National League defeat.

They went down 35-19 at windy Redruth in division three south, having led for 23 first-half minutes.

Alex Meredith produced a typically strong finish to nudge them 7-6 up after 16 minutes, with Huw Griffin converting.

Redruth, however, worked a lineout routine right on half-time and Glenn Cooper crossed. Scott Martin converted to add to his two early penalties.

A poor tactical kick by Jon Graham led to Ian Hambley extending the lead after the break.

Centre Paul Thirlby powered over and wing Craig Burns produced a 30-yard finish, with Martin kicking a conversion.

At 30-7 down Heath looked out of it but excellent driving play by the pack allowed Dave Wattam to pull a try back.

The restart was gathered by Tom Gribble and worked to replacement Adam Phillips, who marked his Heath debut by racing all the way though for Griffin to goal.

That made it 30-19 but Mark Harper rumbled over late on to cap Redruth's win.
