A woman was taken to hospital today after she was knocked down by a bus in central Brighton.

The woman, who has not been named by police, was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital after the accident, in North Street just before 8.30am, which caused traffic jams in the city centre.

A witness said: "She had a cut on her head and didn't look conscious when the ambulance took her away."

Managing director of Brighton and Hove buses Roger French said: "The police are investigating the incident but early indications are that the bus driver didn't have a chance."

Police described the woman's injuries as serious but not believed to be life threatening.

The accident comes less than two weeks after one nearby following which a 35-year-old woman died.

Julie Brennan, of Bourne Street, Eastbourne, was in collision with a bus at the junction of Marlborough Place and North Road.

Sergeant Neil Walker is appealing for witnesses. Call 0845 6070999.
