Albion manager Mark McGhee has put the goalkeeping gloves up for grabs again.

Ben Roberts replaces Michel Kuipers for Tuesday night's LDV Vans Trophy tie against Boston United at Withdean.

Roberts makes his first appearance between the posts since September 13 following back trouble.

McGhee's predecessor Steve Coppell made the former Charlton custodian first choice at the start of the season ahead of Michel Kuipers, but the Dutchman was recalled early from a loan spell at Hull once Roberts was ruled out.

Kuipers has been in pole position ever since and played in McGhee's first match in charge at Peterborough last Saturday.

McGhee said: "I want to get impressions myself. Ben is an experienced goalkeeper and I think he deserves his chance as well. I must learn who is the best of them."

Third-year scholar Adam El-Abd, 19, is set to be handed his first-team debut as captain Danny Cullip has a minor back and hamstring problem.

Youngster Adam Hinshelwood, who deputised at rightback while Paul Watson was injured, also starts a match McGhee is desperate to win with the incentive of the final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff four more rounds away.

"I've told the lads I put enormous significance on it," said McGhee. "I don't care whether it is the LDV Vans or the Champions League, it's my first home game as the manager and I want to start well with the supporters.

"I want the team to get back to winning ways. We have two games to build our form back up again before a really difficult next League game against Bristol City.

"I asked the boys if any of them have been to Cardiff and one or two of them have. Last year I went to the play-off final between Wolves and Sheffield United.

"I would love to be part of something like that and for starters the LDV Trophy would do me. It's an unbelievable venue and it would be a real experience to play there."

Training on Monday included extra shooting, with McGhee seeking a sharper performance than in the 2-2 draw at Peterborough.

"We can sharpen up in every department," he said. "Even when they were shooting yesterday there was a tendency to control and take three strides when they only needed two. Something as simple as that suddenly quickens the whole process up.

"Steve left and the team became a little bit off the pace. It's just about finding little ideas to get them back to what they were earlier in the season, so it's pretty much about fine tuning."

Boston, eighth-bottom in Division Three, welcome back experienced player-coach Neil Redfearn from illness in their bid for a shock second away victory of the season.

Gary Hart, Albion's right winger, said: "We have lost three and drawn one of the last four games. We want to get a win under our belts to get a bit of confidence, so we will be taking it just as seriously as a League game."
