The crumbling West Pier is Brighton's Old Kent Road. The burnt-out landmark has landed the cheapest square on a Monopoly board based on the city, launched today.

However, rather than being offended with the £60 slot, The West Pier Trust is honoured to have been given a position.

General manager Rachel Clark said: "There's a lot of affection for the Old Kent Road."

The limited edition game features 27 of the city's landmarks chosen in a poll.

Pride occupies the red Madeira Drive square in place of the Strand.

David Harvey, chairman of Brighton Pride, said: "It's fabulous news. It's very significant that a gay organisation is being included in a mainstream family board game."

It was a close battle for the top square with the Royal Pavilion landing Mayfair, worth £400.

Runner-up, occupying Park Lane, is the Grand Hotel.

General manager Richard Baker said: "I don't think we should feel too aggrieved at losing out to what most people would agree is Brighton's best-known building."

Brighton and Hove Albion will be pleased to learn they at last have a new home on the board. The game's stadium is on a pink square better known as Whitehall.

One might expect to see The Argus on the Fleet Street square but instead we are at the heart of the action on the Community Chest. But don't expect £20 if you come second in a beauty contest!
