The girlfriend of a murder suspect has been found dead from a drugs overdose.

The 31-year-old woman was discovered at a house in Bute Street, Kemp Town, Brighton, yesterday, a day after her boyfriend's arrest.

The 21-year-old suspect was released from custody today on police bail.

A second man, in his 20s and from Brighton, was arrested yesterday afternoon, also on suspicion of murder.

He was helping with police inquiries today at a Sussex Police custody suite in Hollingbury, Brighton.

The first suspect was arrested soon after a 43-year-old man died following a fight in Moulsecoomb, Brighton.

It is understood the victim was punched and he fell to the pavement, hitting his head, at 6pm on Monday in Newick Road.

He got up and walked away but collapsed minutes later in nearby Southall Avenue, Moulsecoomb.

An ambulance was called and he was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, where he died.

Witnesses in Newick Road said they heard shouting and saw items of shopping being thrown by one group at another moments before the victim was hit.

One woman said: "Apparently, the man who died and a woman pulled up in a car. They were selling shopping or something to the suspect's grandmother.

"An argument broke out and things were being thrown, including toilet rolls and grapes."

A post-mortem was carried out last night and tests were continuing today to determine the cause of death.

Police said they would not reveal the victim's identity until a formal identification had been made but he is understood to be a family man from Brighton.

A team of detectives is working on the case from a specially-designed incident room at Sussex House in Hollingbury, Brighton.

The area where the fight occurred in Newick Road was initially taped off as officers looked for clues.

Detectives and uniformed officers carried out house-to-house inquiries and spoke to neighbours.

One said: "This was such a shock. Everyone knows everyone round here."

The inquiry is being headed by Detective Inspector Lorraine Morrison.

She said: "We are anxious to speak to anyone who saw anything suspicious in Newick Road at around 6pm on Monday.

"We will talk to people in the strictest confidence."

Witnesses or anyone with information should call the Operation Bramble incident room on 0845 6070999.
