I learnt with consternation that Hove Library faces closure because the minority ruling Labour group on the council proposes to move it to the Banqueting Room in Hove Town Hall.

The Brighton and Hove Decorative and Fine Arts Society has used the Banqueting Room for its monthly lectures for around 15 years.

Attendance at each of our lectures is approximately 250 and there are no other suitable halls that we can afford available in the central area of Brighton and Hove.

So we will find ourselves homeless, as has happened with other groups in the community.

The Banqueting Room has no windows and is thus suitable for our illustrated lectures but is this a suitable place for a library?

The existing library is full of natural light. If, for whatever reason, it must close, why can't the library be placed in some of the existing offices in the Town Hall where there is daylight?

The Argus reported a decision would be made at the policy meeting of the Council to be held on October 22.

This is a major issue which needs more time for negotiation and should not be rushed through, as would appear to be the case.
