Twenty years after Sussex rider Ray Palin won the World Fireman's Championship in France, another cyclist from the county has won a medal.

Nigel Siberry, 55, took bronze in his age category at the World Rotary Championships in Germany.

The race took place over 25 laps of a 1.5km town centre circuit.

Siberry, who rides for East Sussex club In Gear, said: "The race was decided on point won by the lap leaders and with extra points on the final lap I decided to try and break away from the rest of the field.

"I managed to hold on to be the first finisher and the extra ten points I won put me in third place overall."

A younger veteran in form is Brighton's Mike Coyle (VC Etoile) who continued his run of fast times in the Epsom CC's 25-mile time trial. Welsh open champion James Millard (API) won in 53mins 17secs.

Coyle, 41, clocked 54.21 for second place and Friston rider James Dear (In Gear) was fifth in 55.49.

Dear, a former Sussex cyclo-cross champion, says he intends to make a serious return to cyclo-cross in the forthcoming winter season.

There will be open meetings every weekend in the south-east, including 13 London League events and three in the Sussex League.

The first Sussex meeting will be run by East Grinstead CC at Deers Leap Park on October 19.

Brighton Excelsior's event in Moulsecoomb's Wild Park is on November 23 and the Etoile meeting is at Lancing Leisure Centre on November 30.

Lewes Wanderers have a full entry of sixty teams for their 18-mile two-up time trial at Laughton on Sunday. Each team will consist of a veteran rider who will be paced by another rider.

Eastbourne's Harry Featherstone are among the elite veterans who should have little difficulty in keeping up with their younger pacemakers.

Their pacers may even have to respond to calls of "faster, faster." Laughton village hall is the race headquarters and the first team starts at 8.30am.
