Prime position on a Monopoly board based on Brighton is being given to the Royal Pavilion.

The famous landmark will take over the Mayfair square on the Monopoly Brighton & Hove Edition to be launched on October 16.

Players will be able to buy the palace for £400.

The decision was made by voters in a Pop Idol-style poll to determine which Brighton and Hove landmark should feature on the game's most expensive square.

It was a close call between the Pavilion, The Grand hotel, The Lanes and Palace Pier.

Monopoly spokesman Graham Barnes said: "Congratulations to the Royal Pavilion. It is a great honour to get the Mayfair square on a special edition board. Thank you to everyone who voted."

Brighton and Hove is gradually taking shape on the board.

The Argus has been given a home on the Community Chest space and top girls' school Roedean is occupying a yellow square with a price tag of £280.

Sussex County Cricket Club appears on a pink square worth £150.

Maker Winning Moves UK has the only licence from Monopoly owners Hasbro to reproduce the game.

The game will be sold at Woolworths, WH Smiths and leading toy and book stores as well as online at www.playaday.com
