An extra 2,300 hours of high-visibility police patrols were made in West Downs division during an anti-street violence campaign.

Operation Resolve III focused on violent crime in public places and included hundreds of visits to licensed premises where officers and agencies made checks and quelled trouble.

The six-day operation included:

Worthing: 790 extra hours of high- visibility patrols, including the fire brigade, 14 arrests connected to violent crime in a public place, 35 for other matters and 90 bottles of alcohol seized and disposed of.

Arun: 377 extra hours of patrols, 14 arrests and Arun District Council's environmental health officer involved in 39 visits to licensed premises in Bognor and 38 in Littlehampton.

Adur: 315 extra hours of patrols, including the fire brigade, and 12 arrests connected with violent crime in a public place.

Arun's Sergeant Mick Potter said: "This was a successful operation in providing reassurance to the community and at the same time enabling us to take positive action against those individuals who commit violent crime.

"Throughout the week we carried out numerous patrols in town centres and visited licensed premises and we are encouraged by the favourable reception we received."

Sergeant Ian Cooke, from Adur, said: "Operation Resolve gave Adur officers an excellent opportunity to provide high-visibility policing in the areas where the public want to see it. We received many compliments from residents, who saw our new police community support officers out offering reassurance on the streets.

"Officers were able to visit almost all of our licensed premises through the week and also arrest those offenders who were outstanding for previously reported offences.

"We reduced not only violent crime in public places but total crime in Adur as well."
