Brighton Bears have snapped up an England basketball international and told fans: "The signings aren't over yet."

Forward Andy Gardiner made his debut in a 111-72 away win over Bognor Pirates in front of about 400 delighted supporters last night.

6ft 6ins Gardiner has spent the last few seasons in Belgium and his arrival is being seen as a coup for Bears chief Nick Nurse.

Nurse last night admitted he was still one signing away from completing his squad.

He added: "Andy is a talent. He can shoot, he can play the three spot in Europe and get inside in domestic matches."

Gardiner, who will be 36 in November, played for Derby, Bracknell and London Towers before moving abroad.

Nurse was glad to see his side get 40 minutes of friendly action against the lower division Pirates but admitted: "We've got a long way to go. It was awful defensively."
