In response to Bill Grant (Letters, September 15), the work to tackle street drinking and nuisance is long-term.

We have to face the problem that there are people who have difficulties with drugs and alcohol.

An enforcement approach without support will only displace the problem.

The council is working proactively alongside Sussex Police and community support officers.

We are addressing anti-social behaviour and assistance for those who are vulnerable.

There has been a substantial reduction in rough sleepers and the number of people arriving in the city without somewhere to live.

Together we need to set realistic expectations. We have to deal with the root cause.

The whole community needs to strive towards a shared goal.

Help will get to the people who need it.

Councillors and support agencies will see to that.
