Council bosses have waded into the row over the closures of three post offices.

The branches facing the axe are in Busticle Lane, Sompting, and Crabtree Lane and Sompting Road in Lancing.

An Arun District Council spokesman said: "Most affected by these closures are the elderly and disabled. This is going to cause a great deal of difficulty and inconvenience for them.

"The nearest post office to the one in Busticle Lane is in North Lancing, more than a mile away. To get to it people will have to cross the busy A27.

"Crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing won't be straightforward either."

The Post Office announced the closures in July.

The council has made its concerns known in a letter to Post Office bosses, who replied with a suggestion that people should catch a bus or take a car.

Council leader Neil Parkin said: "Lancing and Sompting have many elderly residents and the post offices provide a vital service.

"We are concerned at the prospect of losing these important local services, particularly for less mobile residents and poorer members of the community."
