Connor, the cat who survived being covered in creosote, is helping to publicise an award for felines.

This year the white long-haired moggy was nominated for Rescue Cat of the Year after his ordeal.

He had climbed his favourite scratching pole, near his home in Telscombe Cliffs, without realising it had been freshly coated in wood preserver.

The sorry pet returned home and caused £3,000 of damage to owner Paula Woolven's furniture, then collapsed.

After emergency veterinary treatment for burns, Connor survived but has been left with scarring and a permanent oily smell.

His tale brought a nomination for the most incredible story at the Cats Protection Rescue Cat of the Year award.

Owners have until January 16 to nominate their pets for next year's award. Visit www.cats.org.uk or call 08702 099099 for details.
