I am concerned by the state of the walkway between Dukes Mound and Brighton Marina.

As a long term resident of Sussex Square, we have access to the mound via the under-road tunnel in the lower gardens.

From the exit of the lower Sussex Square gardens and along the walkway there are deposits of human excrement, and pools of urine.

In the archway sitting areas, the stench of urine is abominable.

There is also ample evidence of male upon male sexual acts.

There is graffiti advertising "rent boys", broken wine bottles, empty beer cans and silver foil wraps which had obviously contained drugs.

My observations are those of an individual trained in scene of crime examination and police photography and an expert on the subject of drug use and misuse.

This area is used by many people, including those with young children.

Visitors to our city use the walkway and goodness knows what impressions they take home with them.

Crimes of violence have been perpetrated in this area, particularly on the homosexual community.

What is Brighton and Hove City Council going to do to rectify the situation?

From the information I have, police presence in the area appears to be minimal.

Could the council consider the use of CCTV and, in the interim period, board up the recessed sitting areas?

It might be appropriate to employ a civilian security company to patrol the area.

To do nothing is not an option.
