Brighton's unemployed could soon be reaching for the skies, thanks to a new scheme at Gatwick.

The Employment Zone initiative would give jobless people classroom and on-the-job training at the airport.

Employers would then be given the chance to select the best trainees.

A similar scheme at Stansted led to one in 16 of the 4,000 taking part being offered permanent positions.

The plan is to be welcomed, particularly as Gatwick is experiencing problems bringing in staff in light of tough new security vetting.

It would help employers recruit the right staff, provide jobs to some and helpful workplace skills to others.

If the scheme takes off, the sky really is the limit.
