Mary Orchard (Letters, July 23) is right. I recently visited Brussels, Vienna and Prague, which all operate efficient tram services.
I hold the minority view on trams - scrapping them was short-sighted. Parts of the country had tram technology and a rapid transit link before their time.
The theory is that as more people use public transport, the fewer cars there will be on our roads. Trams could persuade people not to use cars.
Opponents should read the evidence. Not many local authorities hold a long term plan on public transport, unlike their European counterparts.
There is no reason why Brighton and Hove City Council can't commission a professional consultant to find out whether it is possible.
