Ansty and Preston Nomads took the honours in the second week of the Sussex Junior Festival.

Ansty under-12s won the Bowl, a week after their under-11s claimed their age group.

Nomads under-12s won the Shield competition to add to the title won by their under-13s in the first week.

Ansty beat St James's Montefiore by 61 runs in the final played at East Grinstead. The same squad won the under-11s title last year.

Batsman Leo Anderson (101) cracked his maiden century from just 88 balls and put on 101 for the second wicket with James Thorpe (39). Leo's innings included 13 fours and three sixes.

Ben Towler made a useful unbeaten 17 to leave Ansty on 191-6 after 30 overs.

St James were then restricted to 130 all out against the bowling of Jamie Newsome (3-25), Tom Handley (2-18), Rob Stacey (2-14) and Joe Hallam (2-20). Keeper Towler made three smart stumpings. James Howard put up some resistance for St James's with a solid 23.

Manager John Thorpe said: "It is the second year in a row the team has won it after we won the under-11s group last year, so it shows how good the side is.

"Most of the boys come from the local schools, Warden Park and Harlands, so they all get on and know each other well. They are a very talented group of players and we are hoping to keep them together so they carry on developing and improving."

John's son, James Thorpe, enjoyed a superb festival week, scoring a total of 259 runs, despite rushing off to Hampshire on Wednesday to play for Sussex under-12s.

He hit 41 to help Ansty beat Brighton and Hove by 113 runs in the first game of the group stage. Newsome (45 not out) and Towler (23 not out) also did well and there were impressive bowling performances by Michael DiBella (3-6), Josh Menzies (3-5) and Tom Handley (2-18).

Thorpe (36) and Newsome (41) put on 86 in the second game against Horsham which was abandoned due to rain before Ansty went on to win by 128 runs against Crawley the following day.

Anderson scored 51 retired and had an opening stand of 111 with Newsome (38). Hallam made 16 in an Ansty total of 168-5.

Crawley managed 40 with Mark Dale taking 4-11 and Menzies 4-5.

Thorpe hit 64 runs in the next game against Findon, which resulted in a 62-run win. Mark Dale (43) and Anderson (37) also made good scores to help Ansty to 179-4. Jack Anderson took 4-13 and Thorpe 2-20 to restrict Findon to 117 all out.

The final game against Chichester was drawn, but was enough for Ansty to win Group B and book their place in the final.

Thorpe made 79 and Rob Stacey made 46 in an Ansty total of 174-7. Sussex bowler Matt Geffen took 2-26 for Priory but it was not enough as Newsome (3-23), Menzies (2-12) and Rob Stacey (2-18) left Chichester on 113-9.

Nomads were too strong for Felpham in the Shield final at Goring.

Man-of-the-match Matthew Sewell cracked 77 to help his side to 161-5 off 30 overs and he put on 82 for the third wicket with Richard Dexter (11).

Scott Thomas (3-9) and Richard Dexter (2-1) restricted the Felpham reply to 86-9.

Brothers Michael and James Chapman starred for Nomads in the group stages and had an opening stand of 256 in the first game against Littlehampton.

Michael scored 144 not out on the first day and followed it up with 52 not out against Goring in the next match. He then went on to smash 103 before retiring to give him an unbeaten total of 299 runs from four group matches.

James hit a career-best 93 in the first match and then took 5-6 off six overs in the win against Eastergate.

Other good performers during the week included Goring batsman Sam Botham, who hit two superb centuries.

East Preston bowler Darryl Rebbetts (4-12) took a hat-trick against Goring, while Kip Reeves, of Ifield, picked up two five-wicket hauls.

Michael Johnson hit two centuries for Bexhill and then took 5-13 against Buxted Park on Monday. Will Pidgeon, of St Andrews, took five wickets in one game, four in another and then smashed 76 against Cuckfield.
