Can I inject a note of realism into the debate on noisy train horns (The Argus, July 29)?

Whether we like it or not, the current noise levels comply with mandatory safety standards.

In order to mount a successful challenge, Brighton and Hove City Council would have to prove injury to residents' health or face wasting a significant amount of taxpayers' money in a failed court case.

This is why affected residents are being asked to provide medical evidence.

The council is continuing its discussions with the Rail Safety and Standards Board about possible alterations to the safety standard, while at the same time ensuring there is adequate safety for track and train operating staff.

Far from dragging our feet, we are doing more than many other local authorities whose residents are suffering the same disturbance.
