An observant resident saved his neighbour's house from being destroyed by a chip pan fire after spotting smoke coming from a window.

The resident of Ladydell Road, Worthing, was able to raise the alarm as the blaze was just beginning to take hold at 6.20pm on Thursday.

A crew from Worthing fire station arrived before any serious damage had been done.

A spokesman for the fire brigade said: "It was very simple. We just kicked down the door and took the pan out the back and ventilated the house.

"Then we repaired the door and waited for the owner to come back.

"Fortunately there was not much damage as the neighbour called us out very quickly."
