A sailor who died in a speedboat accident has been honoured during an event to raise awareness of sea safety.

A plaque has been unveiled in tribute to Ian Langan, 45, who died when a boat steered by his brother crashed into the side of his vessel off Brighton Marina last year.

The accident left Cliff Langan heartbroken and receiving treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder.

The two men were very close and Mr Langan decided to remember his older brother by organising the first annual Sea Safety Awareness Day at Brighton Marina.

The event was held on Sunday - the day before the first anniversary of Ian's death.

Thousands of people saw the plaque unveiled in a poignant ceremony attended by all the Langan family. A cannon went off at 1pm before a rendition of the Last Post was played.

The Reverend Canon Beaumont Brandie, vicar at the Church of the Resurrection off Lewes Road, Brighton, said a few words before the plaque was unveiled.

Mr Langan said: "It was a very emotional and memorable day. The plaque is a great way to remember Ian and should remain at the marina forever."

Paramedics, lifeguards and representatives from the coastguard were among those attending the awareness day.

Mr Langan hopes to encourage everyone using a boat to wear a life jacket at all times.

The event, sponsored by local businesses, featured entertainment, including live music, competitions and a barbecue before it finished with a spectacular laser show.

Mr Langan said: "The input from everyone involved was fantastic and even the weather was great.

"It was a fabulous day and I am very pleased with the strong message we put across.

"If you wear a seatbelt in a car then you should wear a life jacket in a boat. This is not just for August 3 but for every day of the year."
