A train company is offering a £1,000 reward for information after a vandal threw a bin on the tracks, blocking the line to Gatwick for four hours and damaging a train.
More than 200 trains were affected when the 5.30am service from Brighton to Gatwick became tangled up with the metal and bin on Saturday.
A Network Rail spokeswoman said someone had thrown the bin from a road bridge over the track at Haywards Heath station.
She said: "It hit the first train which wasn't damaged but pushed the bin into the line of a second engine.
"The train's shoe gear, which connects it to the electric rail and provides the engine's power, was damaged. This damaged some of the points, which caused delays.
"We are offering a £1,000 reward for information leading to a successful prosecution."
