City watchdog the Financial Services Authority has unveiled insider John Tiner as its next chief executive to replace Sir Howard Davies later this year.

Mr Tiner, 46, will be the first person to hold the position following the Government's decision to split the roles of chairman and chief executive.

Callum McCarthy, who replaces Sir Howard as chairman, will also take up his post on September 22.

Mr Tiner was appointed managing director of the FSA's consumer, investment and insurance directorate in April 2001 following a career at accountants Arthur Andersen.

During his time at the FSA, Mr Tiner led reform of the regulations governing the insurance industry. He also held the most senior responsibility for consumer interests.
