As a Labour voter who has become a tad disillusioned with Labour's arrogance, I was pleased to see its overall majority cut and the opposition parties gaining seats.

Nevertheless, those Left-leaning voters who voted in the local elections through a misguided notion of punishing "President Blair" over Iraq (since when have local elections been fought on national issues?), I hope these people are aware of the monster they have created.

I draw attention to the latest procrastinations by the leader of the much larger Tory group on Brighton and Hove City Council.

Brian Oxley has stated the social housing for the King Alfred site should be placed elsewhere.

This would, of course, strengthen their vote in that ward and reward those living in the rather ghastly, Seventies-style flats overlooking the run-down site who have been shrill in their opposition to anything which interferes with their precious sea views.

Just where should these social housing units go, Brian? Burgess Hill, Crawley or, maybe, Hastings?

I seem to remember Shirley Porter of Westminster Council initiating such a policy of exporting potential Labour voters in the Eighties.

Is this the sort of policy decent people in this city want? Let's get real shall we?

There is a desperate shortage of rented housing for salaried, professional people such as teachers, nurses and police let alone the homeless so social housing is desperately needed.

The Tories are always the party of big business. It was they who privatised the railways and entrenched a notion of competition into public services such as education and the health service.

There has been nothing but greed and self interest from the opposition. It is all about their sea views and their property values. Not one iota of consideration for those desperate to find a home.

This selfish inertia has now found a voice in Coun Oxley and there will always be Selma Montford quietly bleating from the sidelines.

Good voters of this city, sit back and watch the greed and self interest grow now the Tories are back. Well done all.
