More than 236,000 people have visited Brighton Museum and Art Gallery in the year since it reopened after renovation.

The museum had a £10 million refit, including a revamping of the entrance and the addition of an education pavilion.

In the year after it reopened in May 2002, tit has welcomed 236,243 visitors, more than double the figure in the 12 months before it closed for renovation.

Customers have also spent more than £100,000 in the new gift shop at the museum.

Director Jessica Rutherford said: "All the staff are thrilled with the great success of our redevelopment project, and the high visitor figures demonstrate that it was all worthwhile.

"About half our visitors are from Brighton and Hove, so we are proving popular with local residents. The fact that we attract large numbers from further afield shows that our national collections and our creativity and professionalism are recognised at national levels."
