Brighton's population of hip 20 and 30-somethings migrated to Falmer for this showcase event presented by Brighton-based Fat Cat Records.

Eclectic as ever, the six acts ranged from singer-songwriter David Grubbs, who began his set with a neo-classical piano instrumental, to heavily distorted psychedelic noise from New Yorkers Black Dice and the computer-generated visuals of Semiconductor.

Of course, it wasn't a competition but, for my money, third place will have to go to the super-sensitive and gently-warped folk-pop of Drowsy,.

This leaves Crescent, reminiscent of an offbeat and late-night Tom Waits, and Animal Collective with their mellow and beautiful, then erupting into high-pitched, demented screaming, to fight it out for the top spot.

No doubt, most of the audience would disagree, which is precisely what made it such an excellent night.

Nice work Fat Cat.
