Planes, trains and autobuses are in need of tremendous support if Sussex is to keep moving in the 21st Century.

Gatwick is the busiest one runway airport in the world. It is also the largest employer in Sussex.

A second runway will have to be built if the airport is to continue to prosper.

There are conservation problems to be considered but unless the runway is built, some carriers are likely to desert Gatwick for airports willing and able to expand.

Meanwhile, more than £1 billion will be invested in railways by SouthCentral now it has a franchise until the end of 2009.

It sounds good but most is money already spoken for in new rolling stock.

What it needs is a longer franchise so it can get on with major infrastructure projects such as upgrading the line from Hastings to Ashford and reinstating the link between Lewes and Uckfield.

Now Brighton and Hove Buses face industrial action by drivers unless they are paid £8 an hour.

They have already been offered the cash over a longer period as their wages are rising well above the inflation rate.

While drivers deserve a decent wage in a high-price city, giving it to them all in one go would lead to an even bigger rise in fares than being proposed later this month.
