Sussex Premier League: Steyning are the surprise early league leaders having won both their opening matches.

On Saturday, they enjoyed a 41-run victory at fancied Horsham as Giles Haywood took 6-30.

Champions Hastings suffered a shock defeat, by four wickets, at newly promoted East Grinstead.

Consistent batting enabled Steyning to reach 263-8 declared, with Nick Colley (45) and New Zealander Mark Fraser (44) leading the way. Luke Marshall took 3-39.

Despite 59 from Mark Nash and 42 from Australian Michael Bright, Horsham were bowled out for 222 as Haywood got to work.

John Morgan (60) and George Campbell (46), in his last game before leaving for a teaching assignment in Switzerland, helped Hastings gain maximum batting points at East Grinstead with 232 all out.

Richard Sims, who will be in Zimbabwe's one-day side this summer, took 5-74.

Sims (48) also did well with the bat, along with Danny Jordan (44) and Alan Tait (42 not out) as Grinstead cruised home at 236-6 with an over to spare.

On a newly laid pitch at the Saffrons, Eastbourne made 201-9 declared which was was enough for a 13-run win against Brighton and Hove Paul Stevens hit 39 and Richard Smith 37 as Matt Wood took 3-26 and Andy Sartor 2-58.

The lower order Brighton batting failed after Bas Zuiderent had made 59 and Rob Wakeford 54, Jon Lord (4-27) and new Sussex paceman Sean Rashid (3-55) did as damage as the visitors tumbled to 188 all out.

Chichester were forced to close their innings at 141-7 from 45 overs in a rain-affected game at Worthing, Andy Bennett making 54 not out and Jez Goode 25.

Chris Mansell took 4-47 but the batsmen failed to provide much support and crashed to 111 all out in 38 overs. Chichester skipper Nick Dyer grabbed 5-36 and John Leggett took 4-21 as Worthing suffered their second defeat in two starts.

At Three Bridges, Stirlands gained maximum batting points but finished 29 runs short of victory with seven wickets down.

Bridges rattled up 253-4 declared, with Western Australian Andy Nicholls hitting 90 and skipper Danny Alderman 76. Aussie Shane Cleary, a New South Wales under-19 pace bowler, took 3-67.
