Charity shop manager Brenda Duffin is getting ready to put her best foot forward for cancer research.

She has been running the Cancer Research UK shop in George Street, Hove, for three years, helping to raise vital cash for the charity's work.

Now she is planning something a little different by joining shop managers, staff and volunteers from the region to take part in the annual Race for Life event.

She said: "The race is a wonderful thing to get involved in. There is a serious reason why we need to raise money but the event itself is also fun.

"There is always such a good atmosphere and everyone is trying to do what they can to help. Whether you walk the route or run it, at least you know you are doing your bit for an important cause."

More than 300,000 women are expected to take part in 5km runs and walks at 130 venues across the UK.

A large number taking part will have suffered from cancer or have a friend or relative who has or had the disease.

Women of all ages and levels of fitness can take part with the focus on getting together to raise money for research, not on the fastest time.

Cancer is one of the UK's biggest killers with one in three people expected to develop it at some point in their life. One in four will die from the disease.

Four races are taking place in Sussex this year and although hundreds of women have already registered, there are still plenty of spaces.

The runs take place at Stanmer Park, Brighton, July 6; Hampshire Park, Eastbourne, June 1; Tilgate Park, Crawley, June 4 and Alexandra Park, Hastings, June 29. Entry fee is £7.50 and £4.50 for girls under 18.

People can enter as individuals or as teams. Entrants are asked to raise at least £50 in sponsorship.
