Brighton and Hove City Council chief executive David Panter's response (Letters, May 1) about the weekend operation of council services was disingenuous.

Pavement and promenade litterbins were not emptied for at least two days of the May Bank Holiday weekend, leading to rubbish overflowing.

I did not attempt to contact Cityclean.

When contractors started working at 7.15am on a Saturday morning at a local building site recently (where the agreement is that work should not start before 8am on a Saturday), the earliest any input could be obtained from environmental health was the following Monday.

As happens boringly frequently, when cars park on the double yellow lines outside my garage, impeding access, the only communication possible with NCP at any time, let alone weekends, is a telephone pushbutton option rigmarole culminating in one having to leave a recorded message with no guarantee of any response and no confirmation the message has been received.

Each of these services, and others, at a time when weekends are becoming indistinguishable from weekdays, should be much more accessible and accountable - we pay enough for them.
