The quietest spot in Worthing on bank holiday Sunday was around the millennium beacon, where a circle of people stood in silence for an hour.
As day-trippers strolled past on the promenade many stopped to read the group's placards and some stayed to show their support.
The event was a public witness to peace, organised to coincide with Quakers taking pro-peace actions around the UK between 4pm and 5pm that day.
About 40 people maintained the circle of silence for the full hour with others joining in for a while.
Angela Latham, who runs the Be Still For Peace meditation group and who organised the event on behalf of the Worthing Society of Friends, said: "It was an unusual and interesting way to show our belief in the ever-growing need for world peace.
"The peaceful energy generated by the circle was quite powerful and everyone who took part enjoyed the experience.
"If it made even one or two passersby think more deeply about peace then that's a bonus."
