Brighton-based Midnight Communications has been named the biggest public relations (PR) company in the South of England by the industry bible, PR Week.

The company, which began as a one-person operation in the Brighton Media Centre in 1995, moved up 27 places in the magazine's UK league tables to 53, making it the biggest PR firm south of London.

The marketing industry as a whole has suffered badly from the economic downturn but Midnight has maintained its size while many rivals have downsized or ceased trading.

Clients include international brands such as Fujifilm, O2, VNU Business Publications and Sony. The company also represents local businesses and organisations such as Wired Sussex, InsurE.com and Mistral Internet.

Managing director Antony Mayfield said: "We've managed to buck the sharp downward trend in the marketing industry. In the current economic climate standing still is winning.

"Our success backs our belief that you don't have to be in London to be a first-class media company."
