Albion have responded angrily to claims by star striker Bobby Zamora that he has been priced out of a move to the Premiership.

Zamora told a national newspaper chairman Dick Knight has been unfair to him.

Martin Perry, Albion's chief executive, said: "Bobby or his agent need to get into the real world of football finance.

"The club has received no offers for him and if we were to then Bobby would be informed.

"He should know and his agent should know the number of transfers that have taken place in the last six months, in and out of the transfer window, has been absolutely tiny because clubs have not got any money.

"That is the reason there has been no movement, not because of the way the club has acted.

"We have always acted in his best interests. We gave him his opportunity and he is contracted to us. If that is what he has said it's a very unfair comment and complete nonsense.

"I think it is sad if he feels that way. The reality is we have supported Bobby in every way possible and will continue to do so.

"If an offer is made we have always promised him he will be told about it and it would be discussed with him.

"The three criteria are what is in the best interests of the club, the supporters and Bobby himself. That has been the case and will always been the case."

Leicester manager Micky Adams signed Zamora for Albion three summers ago from Bristol Rovers in a £100,000 deal which included a 30 per cent sell-on clause.

Adams exclusively revealed to The Argus in December Zamora is his top transfer target.

Spurs chief Glenn Hoddle has also regularly monitored the progress of the England under-21 international, who has scored 75 goals in 122 games for the Seagulls.

In Saturday's article, Zamora expressed his desire to join the likes of former Sunday football team-mates John Terry, Stuart Taylor, Paul Konchesky and Ledley King in the Premiership.

He said: "Why haven't people put offers in? It's down to the chairman. If he thinks I'm worth £5 million, nobody in their right mind is going to pay £3 million to £5 million for somebody who has only played in the First, Second and Third Divisions.

"I just wish he would be fair to me. It is frustrating. I could break my leg next week and never get the chance to play in the Premiership."

Zamora also made reference to the Albion players washing their own kit, the modest surroundings at Withdean and delays over plans for a new stadium at Falmer.
