Remember the day when kids were kids and nobody thought about being a pop star?

No, thought not. We are constantly bombarded with reality television shows depicting some wannabe or other, trying to make it to the very top.

Now we've even got a musical dedicated to the cause of rising stars in the form of Fame.

This tour is back to where it kicked off in January 2002. Pop Idol eat your heart out.

Unless you've been living in a cave for the past 20 years you will instantly know the gist of Fame.

It involves the hopeful rise to fame by legwarmer-clad New York performing arts students - and its popularity does not seem to be waning.

According to producer Adam Spiegel, this tour is successful for two reasons.

He says: "We have got the best cast we have ever had.

"Also, reality television shows like Fame Academy have fuelled interest in the story line."

While rags to riches tales do appeal to most of us, Fame has an added incentive.

Spiegel says: "We are living in a celebrity-obsessed culture. Mention the word fame and everybody listens."

Instead of becoming old and tired, this musical has kept producing fresh performances, even if the cast has done 416 performances since opening.

This vibrancy is partly because auditions are not held exclusively in London, like many other musicals.

"Wherever we go we try to hold auditions to keep the parts fresh," says Adam.
