I could hardly believe what Adam Trimingham reported under the headline "£1m threat if flats plan scrapped" (The Argus, March 17).

Does he mean to tell readers that Brighton and Hove City Council committed itself to a choice of schemes, incurring a liability of £1m of council taxpayers money - just for starters?

Does this mean if none of the schemes is implemented we shall have to fork out the £1m regardless?

For what exactly? How is this staggering bill made up?

It seems to me the council committed itself entirely to some gigantic scheme and has thereby incurred the huge cost on the assumption it was a foregone conclusion.

What happens, for example, if, as a result of war, the money taps are switched off? Do we have to cough up just the same?

I suggest the District Auditor be brought in on this one - and rather sharpish, too.

This looks sickeningly serious to me.
