A new group will explore ways of opening up the countryside for future generations.
People and organisations across East Sussex are being asked to join the Local Access Forum, set up as a result of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act.
The forum will aim to make the countryside more accessible, while respecting land management, wildlife and landscape.
It will meet several times a year and liaise with East Sussex County Council and the Countryside Agency about their responsibilities.
About 12 members are needed, to serve for at least three years.
Councillor Tony Reid, lead Cabinet member for transport and environment, said: "Access to the countryside is extremely important for rural businesses, as was shown during the foot-and-mouth crisis.
"It is a target of the council's to improve and promote its rights of way network during the next three years."

The closing date for applications is April 11.
