Hundreds of Mid Sussex villagers are expected to object to a landfill site near their homes tonight.

Villagers are angry at proposals to tip non-toxic waste on land at the Freshfield Lane Brickworks, near Horsted Keynes.

Objectors will attend a meeting at Clair Hall in Haywards Heath tonight to voice their concerns.

They include the Freshfield Action Group (Fag) and residents of Horsted Keynes, Danehill, and Lindfield.

They are concerned the site would make narrow roads around the brickworks hazardous and spoil the countryside.

The brickworks is one of 30 proposed sites earmarked for waste disposal or recycling by West Sussex County Council in its waste local plan, including six proposed sites for non-toxic waste.

Fag member Barley MacGrath, who lives near Horsted Keynes, said: "Landfill sites generate huge amounts of heavy lorry traffic, which would be disastrous on the narrow country lanes around the brickworks."

The proposed route to the site would also run through the conservation area of Danehill.

The site at Freshfield Lane was recommended to the council by Cory Environmental, a waste management company.

A spokesman for the company said rubbish would be used to fill a hole in land at the brickworks which had been quarried for clay.

He said: "Because part of the quarry's life is now at an end, there is an opportunity to land-fill the site. We have put in the proposal as a means of restoring it."

After the hole was filled it would be "restored", possibly covered with grass and turned into recreation land.

A council spokesman said: "No decisions have been taken about which sites will be chosen."

Objectors have until June 26 to send their views to the county council.

Tonight's meeting will start at 7.30pm.
