Almost £9,000 has been spent by Worthing Borough Council over the past year removing asbestos from buildings in the town.

A total of £4,170 was spent on the Meadow Road depot metal store, £3,936 at the Denton Lounge kitchen and £802 on Colonnade House, at the junction of High Street and Warwick Street.

This year, the council will look at asbestos known to exist on the second floor of the Town Hall in Chapel Road.

Victor Swanwick, the council's surveying services manager, said: "The Health and Safety Executive is likely to put a lot of effort into heightening awareness on the issues and dangers surrounding asbestos and this may well bring pressure on the council to show how it deals responsibly with this issue."
