Moves to build a new sewage works at Shoreham are expected to be opposed tonight.

Adur councillors have been recommended to formally object to Shoreham Harbour being picked as the site for a new wastewater treatment works.

Businesses and residents of Brighton and Hove, Woodingdean, Ovingdean, Rottingdean, Saltdean, Telscombe Cliffs and Peacehaven generate 95 million litres of wastewater a day.

An existing sewage works at Telscombe Cliffs, built in the 1970s, gives the waste basic treatment then pumps it out to sea through a 1.8km pipe.

New European directives mean Southern Water has to improve the treatment of wastewater which has heightened the need for another sewage works in the area.

An Adur council report said the distance between Shoreham Harbour and Brighton's sewer network could mean an 8km pipeline being built under Brighton seafront and the A259.

The report said: "The construction of such a pipeline would have a major effect on the A259 and the surrounding area.

"The Shoreham site clearly does not meet the proximity principle which is one of the criteria set down by the Government on sites for a wastewater treatment works."

Another criterion was that waste should be treated and disposed of within the region in which it is produced.

Adur's executive policy board will consider the report at a 7pm meeting at the Civic Centre.
