The news that asylum-seekers may be housed in the Grand Ocean Hotel at Saltdean has triggered predictable anger and hype.
While some people have raised their worries in a sensible manner, far too many others have been shrill and racist.
Now Sussex Chief Constable Ken Jones has warned everyone to calm down on the issue of asylum.
Despite the rants of the Right-wing Press, it's simply not true that all asylum-seekers are bogus, that they are living in luxury and that they milk the NHS.
This sort of abuse can only lead to friction and in some cases to asylum-seekers being threatened or even attacked.
Mr Jones has led the way in instructing his officers to deal with this tricky issue calmly and reasonably.
Others should follow his example, particularly those living in Saltdean, enabling solutions fair to both the asylum-seekers and the residents.
