Councillors and the police took action after youngsters were killed and seriously injured in Madeira Drive in Brighton.

They agreed to temporary barriers, which can be installed on the fast, straight stretch of seafront every time police hear boy racers are about to go there.

But relatives of those who have died or been injured feel the barriers are not enough and they are right.

It would be simple to install a speed camera and it would not be hard to find other ways of stopping this road being used as a racetrack.

Islands, which can be removed, could be installed. They have been in The Mall in London for many years. It would also be possible to put in temporary speed humps.

Madeira Drive, built as a racetrack almost a century ago, is not only too much of a temptation for boy racers but has also been the scene of some horrific accidents for which they cannot be blamed.

The road, which provides valuable parking space all the year round, should not be closed as has been suggested. But sensible measures, which have worked successfully elsewhere, should do the trick.
