I do so agree with Sylvia Harwood (Letters, January 4). We have a great deal to thank the NHS for, even in this day and age.

It is constantly struggling to meet targets but when I really needed its help, it came through.

I fell and fractured my knee. I was unable to move and in severe pain. An ambulance arrived within minutes and I was operated on 24 hours later.

I received excellent care from Mr Robin Turner at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, and on one occasion when transport arranged for me to attend one of his clinics failed to turn up, a taxi was arranged.

Although I have ongoing health problems, I can only thank the hospital for the excellent care I received.
