Conservation watchdogs have hit out at plans to knock down an Edwardian home and build flats for the elderly.

Developers want to demolish 22 Winchester Road, Worthing, and replace it with eight two-bedroom and two one-bedroom apartments.

But the Worthing Society objected, stating: "This corner property lies within a conservation area.

"The reason for this road and the adjacent road being given this status was because of its substantial and cohesive quality of architecture.

"The proposed three-storey building would be entirely out of keeping and we consider the design of inferior quality.

"If this application is allowed, it would undoubtedly create a precedent and lead to further incursions of a similar nature."

The Conservation Area Advisory Committee strongly objected, saying the development was alien to the character of the area.

English Heritage said: "Number 22 appears to be in reasonable condition and the most sustainable approach would be to adapt and convert."

The application will be discussed by planners tomorrow.
