A battle to prevent the destruction of the historic Martello Tower in Seaford has been boosted by a lottery award.
A £130,000 grant has been awarded to preserve the 195-year-old seafront landmark which houses the town's museum.
Staff have been struggling to protect the museum's artefacts in a constant battle against water penetration.
The grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund will make the tower watertight and protect the museum's extensive collection.
Lewes District Council is topping up the grant with another £30,000 in addition to £5,000 from Seaford Town Council and £5,000 from Seaford Museum and Heritage Society.
Work on carrying out £170,000 worth of structural improvements, together with new internal rooms for archives, meetings and office use, is due to begin in Spring.
The tower and archive will remain open during the renovations.
Kay Turvey, chairman of the Museum and Heritage Society, said: "All of us involved in the running of the museum are delighted to have secured this funding."
